925 Sterling Silver and Lucky Sixpence ‘Celebration / Birthday’ Coin Pendant
A lucky sixpence set into 925 sterling silver.
The coin in the photo is from 1963 and the perfect gift for celebrating a 60th birthday or anniversary, 1963 being the year of birth or marriage.
All of my coin pendants are made from genuine sixpences that have been in previous circulation and they range in year between 1948 and 1967. Select your chosen year from the drop down menu on the product page.
Made to order so please allow a small delay in delivery. Handmade by me in my North Yorkshire studio from hand forged Sterling Silver (not plated).
This pendant does not include any form of chain, you are just buying the pendant which has a bail that’s big enough for a chain upto approx 4mm wide. If however you prefer to receive your new pendant with a chain, within the listing choices you can select an optional 18” standard sterling silver trace chain at a small additional cost or you can visit the ‘just chains’ section of my website where you can browse my collection of handmade chains to complement the pendant or upgrade to a longer length trace as per your preference.
(Photos show pendant on a chain for illustration purposes only)
All my jewellery is sent to you in my signature gift box.
The History of the Lucky Sixpence
Historically given the nickname of a Tanner which is thought to have its origins in the Romany Gypsy word ‘tawno’ meaning ‘small one’, Sixpences have long been seen and gifted as a luck symbol.
As a long standing tradition Sixpences continue to be seen sewn behind RAF pilot's Brevet (wings) on their uniforms and they are often mixed within Christmas puddings or given to brides on their special day to wish the receiver the best of luck for their future whatever it may hold.
Their design has been changed three times since 1930 with each monarch's reign. See below for more detail:
1926 to 1936
Featured six oak sprigs divided by six acorns
1937 to 1952
Featured a crown royal cypher
1953 onwards
Feature a floral design of a rose, thistle, shamrock and leek.
Only pre 1947 are made from actual Silver.
